Long Codes

What is a long code?

As a general rule, long codes, or please call me lines, are offered at no charge to customers and allow for one on one communication. Currently Long Codes are available on MTN, VIRGIN MOBILE, VODACOM, 8ta and CELL C and can be sent from a subscriber’s cellular phone at standard rates.

One of the advantages of using Long Codes is that you can receive up to 50 SMSs per second and because you are using virtual SIM hosting, the usual restrictions of SIM card hosting do not apply.

Another advantage is that when you run a specific campaign, you are able to customize the response sent to the client OR stipulate where the incoming SMS should be sent, either via email or to a mobile number.

What are the key differences between short codes and long codes?

The key distinction between the two is that long codes are intended as a person-to-person communication tool, whereas short codes allow for the bulk messaging that is typical of marketing and emergency notification campaigns.

Long codes are standard phone numbers, such as 082 555 7676. Short codes are the much smaller, five-digit numbers that you typically see used in marketing and promotions.

Long Codes are a high-value, low-cost solution that supports rapid deployment.

Fast and reliable channel to collect feedback, orders, confirmations, requests from your customers, partners and employees.
